Dubai Scholars Model United Nations hosted its second session over three days from 31st January 2019 to 2nd February 2019. The theme of the Model United Nations was ‘Sustainable Adaption; Global Consensus on Critical Matters’. The Secretary Generals of the MUN were Sara Toofail and Ahmed Rayyan Abbasi. There were six committees: the Human Rights Council, the General Assembly 1, the General Assembly 3, the Security Council, the Economic and Financial Committee and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

130 delegates from 12 different schools participated in this event. The primary aim of DSMUN’19 was to simulate the real activities of the United Nations. Students took on the role of delegates of nations all around the world. Moreover, the MUN aimed to provide a deeper understanding of multilateral diplomacy, the strengthening of negotiation and leadership skills, and the improvement of the ability to anticipate evolving scenarios of complex and important issues.
|
The event started with an opening speech from the Secretary General, Sara Toofail, following which the Chairs and Co-chairs of each of the six committees were introduced. The delegates were then taken to their allocated committee rooms. Eight committee sessions were conducted over the course of three days, each of a duration of around two hours. An International Summit was conducted on the last day [i.e. Saturday].
|
All the delegates from all the committees were assembled in one room, and a resolution from each committee was debated and voted upon. After the International Summit, the Secretary General, Ahmed Rayyan Abbasi delivered a speech for the closing ceremony, after which three awards from each committee were given; these were ‘Best Delegate’, ‘Best Delegate Runner Up’ and ‘Best Position Paper’.

The entire event was a result of the hard work and dedication of Mrs. Smrithi Mendonca [Dubai Scholars’ MUN Director], the Secretariat and the Volunteers/Support Staff, each and every one of whom deserves a heartfelt thanks for providing such an amazing experience to students not only of DS, but of other schools as well.
